Bobbins Spools

The textile industry around the world is literally carried on the shoulders of bobbins, spools, and shuttles. In common terminology, the bobbins were used to wind spun yarn on a compact carrier that could in inserted in the center of a shuttle and shot across the open weaving shed to form the filling or pick. A spool is another name for a yarn carrier often used to carry thread for sewing (thread is generally finer than yarn). A shuttle traditionally carries the bobbin across the shed. As technology evolved, shuttles were replaced by other means of transport: rapiers, airjet, waterjet and other means. In the “olden days” the hard wood bobbins, spools and shuttles carried the day.
